Travel
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1342

O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this journey and the goodness of what it contains, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this journey and the evil of what it contains. O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of the outcome, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of the outcome.

Allahumma inni as'aluka min khairi hadhihis-safari, wa khairi ma fihi, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihis-safari, wa sharri ma fihi, Allahumma inni as'aluka khairal-'aqabah, wa a'udhu bika min sharri 'aqabah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a beautiful expression of reliance on Allah (SWT) when undertaking a purposeful journey. It acknowledges His dominion over all affairs and seeks His assistance in achieving the desired outcome while safeguarding against potential difficulties. By asking for the 'goodness of the outcome' (khairal-'aqabah), you are not just asking for a safe trip, but for a journey that yields positive results aligned with what is best for you in this life and the next. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to seek the best and seek refuge from the worst in all our endeavors, and travel is no exception.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'When you travel and set out on a journey, invoke Allah for good. And when you dismount, invoke Allah for good. And when you arrive at your destination, invoke Allah for good.' Then he mentioned the supplication: 'O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this journey and the goodness of what it contains, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this journey and the evil of what it contains. O Allah, make the distance easy for me, and grant me the good of the journey, and the good of what is in it, and the good of what is intended by it. And I seek refuge in You from the arduousness of the journey, and from seeing anything unpleasant, and from returning to my family and wealth with evil.' (This entry uses a specific part of a broader travel dua as taught by the Prophet ﷺ, focusing on the purpose of the journey. The full context illustrates a comprehensive approach to travel supplication.)
