Travel
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 2893

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt, from being overcome by the enemy, from being overcome by hatred, and from the misery of this world and the next.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni, wa ghalabatil-'aduwwi, wa ghalabatish-shanai', wash-shaqai'i fid-dunya wal-akhirah.

When to Read

This powerful supplication can be recited when you feel the weight of being away from home and loved ones pressing down on you. While it directly asks for refuge from specific hardships, the general plea to Allah for protection from overwhelming distress and misery encompasses the emotional turmoil of homesickness and longing. It's particularly relevant when feelings of loneliness or anxiety arise during your journey.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a sincere heart, turning your attention fully towards Allah. Raise your hands as you do so, a gesture of earnest supplication. Imagine the specific anxieties and feelings of longing you are experiencing, and present them to Allah, seeking His protection and solace. It’s best recited after the obligatory prayers (Fardh) or at any time you feel the need for comfort and reassurance.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking refuge in Allah from overwhelming debt, enemies, hatred, and worldly/otherworldly misery provides immense psychological comfort. By acknowledging these potential hardships and asking Allah for protection, you shift your focus from the problem to the Solution-Giver. This can alleviate the anxiety associated with homesickness, reminding you that Allah is with you wherever you go and He is the ultimate source of relief and security. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this comprehensive dua for protection, indicating its broad applicability to various forms of distress.
