Dua for a Traveler Who Has Been Injured

Travel
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5743

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا، بِرِيقُ بَعْضِنَا، شِفَاءُ سَقِيمِنَا، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا.

In the name of Allah, with the soil of our land and the saliva of some of us, our sick are healed by the permission of our Lord.

Bismillahi, turbatu ardhina, riqu ba'dina, shifa'u saqeemina, bi'idhn Rabbina.

When to Read

This profound dua is recited when a traveler, or anyone for that matter, suffers an injury. It is typically recited by placing a hand on the injured area, often accompanied by mixing a bit of one's own saliva with the earth (if possible and permissible in the circumstances) and reciting this dua. It's a supplication for healing that acknowledges Allah's power over all ailments.

How to Read

The practice described in the hadith involves touching the afflicted area with the right hand, reciting this dua. If a person is not the one injured, they can recite it over the injured person. The act of mixing earth with saliva is symbolic and a means, with true healing originating from Allah (SWT). Ensure sincerity and complete reliance on Allah for recovery.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies a beautiful blend of seeking a cure through both material means (earth and saliva as symbols of our connection to nature and ourselves) and the ultimate divine power of Allah (SWT). It teaches us humility and dependence on our Creator even when using remedies. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself used this method, demonstrating its validity and efficacy as a source of spiritual and physical comfort during times of illness and injury. It reminds us that all healing is ultimately from Allah, as He is the One who says 'Be' and it is.

Source & Authentication

Narrated 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): When a person among them complained of a wound or a scratch, the Prophet (ﷺ) would say (with his finger put on the ground like this): 'Bismillahi, turbatu ardhina, riqu ba'dina, shifa'u saqeemina, bi'idhn Rabbina.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5743). Another narration in Sahih Muslim (2194) states: ' Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that when the Prophet (ﷺ) complained about a thing, he would recite this Dua: 'بِسْمِ اللّهِ تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا، رِيقُ بَعْضِنَا، شِفَاءُ سَقِيمِنَا، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا، يُشفي بَعْضَهُ وَيُعَافِي إِذَا بَرَأَ بِأَحْدِهُم، فَيَتَاصَدَلُ يَدَهُ فَيَقُولُ طُينَا، ثُمَّ يَقُولُ رَبِّي الله، إِلِيَكَ وَأَمْاصِهُ، شِفَاءَكَ، شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَما، مِنْ عَيْنِك وَلَا ضَرْرِ، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّي الالهِ.' (O Allah, Lord of mankind! Remove the disease, cure the sick, for You are the Shafi (Healer). There is no healing except Your healing. A healing that leaves no disease behind). The Prophet's method described in Bukhari is more concise for general injuries.
