When Life Feels Overwhelming: Dua for Trusting Allah's Grace

Trust in Allah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6137

حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ

Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god but Him. I have placed my trust in Him, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.

Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa Huwa, 'alayhi tawakkaltu wa Huwa Rabbul-'Arshil-'Adheem.

When to Read

This powerful declaration is perfect for those moments when you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders. Recite it when facing a personal crisis, overwhelming worry, or any situation where you feel incapable of handling things on your own. It's a reminder that no matter how dire the circumstances, our ultimate reliance is on Allah. You can make it a regular part of your morning remembrance (dhikr) to strengthen your reliance on Him throughout the day.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere conviction, truly feeling the meaning behind the words. Understand that 'Hasbi Allah' means Allah is enough for me. This isn't just saying the words; it's an active surrender to Allah's plan and His power. Make sure to pause and reflect on each phrase. It's best recited after obligatory prayers or during times of quiet contemplation, focusing your heart and mind on your Lord.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates complete reliance on Allah, known as Tawakkul. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was told by Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that this was the statement of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when he was thrown into the fire, and that it was the statement of Muhammad ﷺ when the people said: 'Verily, the people have gathered against you, so fear them,' (Surah Aal-Imran 3:173). This shows its immense power and sufficiency in the face of extreme adversity. By reciting it, we affirm our belief that Allah is our ultimate protector and provider, and that He alone is capable of handling any challenge.

Source & Authentication

Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: 'The last statement of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when he was thrown into the fire was: 'Hasbiyallahu wa ni'mal-wakeel' (Allah is sufficient for me and He is the best disposer of affairs).' And the last statement of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when the people said: 'Verily, the people have gathered against you, so fear them,' was: 'Hasbiyallahu wa ni'mal-wakeel.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 4563 - This is the context for the phrase, the specific dua is attributed to the Prophet ﷺ in other narrations). More directly, concerning the full phrase, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Whoever says in the morning seven times: 'Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa Huwa, 'alayhi tawakkaltu wa Huwa Rabbul-'Arshil-'Adheem,' Allah will suffice him from whatever worries him, whether he says it when he is truthful or he says it in jest, Allah will grant him that.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5081, graded Hasan by some scholars). The version provided in the main entry is the one that combines the essence of Tawakkul with the Throne of Allah, a profoundly comforting thought.
