The Quran explicitly states the efficacy of this dua: 'And Dhul-Nun (Yunus) when he went off in anger, and thought that We would not exert Our power over him. Then he called out in the darkness, saying: "There is no god but You; glory be to You! Indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers." So We responded to him and saved him from the distress.
