Entrusting Your Safety to Allah: A Traveler's Dua

Trust in Allah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2709

O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor in the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, the sorrow of seeing [what one dislikes], and the bad turning [of fortune] concerning property and family.

Allahumma anta as-sahibu fis-safari wal-khaleefatu fil-ahli. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari wa ka'abatil-mandhari wa soo'il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahli.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua covers several aspects of seeking Allah's protection during travel. It acknowledges Allah as the 'Companion on the journey,' implying His constant presence and support, and the 'Successor in the family,' entrusting the well-being of loved ones to His care. Seeking refuge from 'hardships of the journey' (wa'tha'is-safari) encompasses physical difficulties, dangers, and weariness. Protection from 'sorrow of seeing' (ka'abatil-mandhari) guards against encountering unpleasant sights or events. Finally, seeking refuge from 'bad turning of fortune concerning property and family' (soo'il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahli) is a plea for the safety of one's wealth and the people left behind upon returning.
