Narrated Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): 'Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He] is the best Disposer of affairs.' (3:173) Ibrahim (a sub-narrator) said, 'Once Hasan bin Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them) was suffering from a painful wound. So, I went to visit him. While I was with him, his father (Hasan bin Ali) came and he said to him: 'I advise you to say what Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: 'Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa huwa 'alayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa Rabbul 'arshil 'adheem.' (Allah is sufficient for me, there is no deity but He. I have placed my trust in Him, He is the Lord of the Throne)." So Hasan bin Hasan said this, and Allah healed him. It is also narrated that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ on the day of the battle of Badr: 'O Allah's Messenger! If we were to see them, they would be a mere mouthful.' (Meaning, they are too weak). The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'O Abu Bakr, you have said this twice, but we are not summoned to this except for the purpose of our prayers, for when our enemies are at the opposite side, we say: "Hasbiyallahu wa ni'mal wakeel." (Allah is Sufficient for us and He is the Best Disposer of affairs.)' So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said this on that occasion, and the following verse was revealed: 'They returned with Allah's favour and grace, no evil injured them...' (3:174) (This is from Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 75, Hadith 415, where the wording is slightly different but the meaning is the same, and the relevant supplication is found in multiple hadith, including 6306 in Kitab al-Da'awat).
