Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates seeking refuge from internal and external evils that can affect us and our relationships. By reciting it, we acknowledge Allah's power to shield our marriages from envy (hasad) and the evil eye (ayn), which are real spiritual afflictions. It fosters reliance on Allah (tawakkul) and reminds us that protection comes only from Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this comprehensive supplication as a means of seeking comprehensive divine protection.
Source & Authentication
Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet ﷺ used to teach them this supplication as he taught them a Surah from the Qur'an. He would say: 'A'udhu billahi min jahannama, wa a'udhu billahi min 'adhabi al-qabr, wa a'udhu billahi min fitnat al-dajjal, wa a'udhu billahi min fitnat an-nisaa' (I seek refuge in Allah from Hell, I seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave, I seek refuge in Allah from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in Allah from the trial of women). Then he mentioned some other phrases. And Ibn 'Abbas narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that he used to say: 'Bismillah, a'udhu billahi min ash-shaytani wa sharri nafsi, wa a'udhu billahi an aqtarifa 'ala nafsi su'an aw ajirrahu ila muslimin' (In the name of Allah, I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of Satan and from the evil of myself. And I seek refuge in Allah from bringing evil upon myself or extending it to any Muslim).
