Spouse
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2713

O Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth, our Lord and Lord of all things, the One who splits the grain and the date seed, the Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran. I seek refuge in You from the evil of every evil creature, the forelock of which You are seizing. O Allah, You are the First, and there is nothing before You. You are the Last, and there is nothing after You. You are the Outwardly apparent, and there is nothing above You. You are the Inwardly hidden, and there is nothing closer than You. Settle our debts for us and enrich us from poverty.

Allahumma Rabba as-samawati wa al-ard, Rabbana wa Rabba kulli shay', faliq al-habbi wa an-nawa, wa munzil at-Tawrati wal-Injili wal-Qur'an, a'udhu bika min sharri kulli dhi sharra anta akhidhun bi-nasiyatih. Allahumma anta al-Awwalu fa laysa qablaka shay', wa anta al-Akhiru fa laysa ba'daka shay', wa anta adh-Dhahiru fa laysa fawqaka shay', wa anta al-Batinu fa laysa duna ka shay', iqdi 'anna daynana wa aghnina min al-faqr.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is comprehensive, covering seeking refuge from evil, acknowledging Allah's unique divine attributes, and seeking relief from debt and poverty. While it can be recited at any time, it's particularly potent when recited with sincerity during times of hardship, distress, or when seeking general protection and well-being. For a spouse experiencing grief, reciting this dua can be a way to seek solace in Allah's all-encompassing power and mercy, asking Him to protect them from the negative aspects of their grief and to grant them peace and relief from their burdens.

How to Read

Recite this dua with a sincere heart, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. It is best to have a clear mind and be in a state of purity if possible. You can raise your hands slightly, as is customary when making dua. Repeat it consistently, especially during the difficult moments of grief, believing in Allah's ability to ease the pain and grant inner peace.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a profound seeking of refuge in Allah. It acknowledges His absolute sovereignty and control over all creation, which can be incredibly reassuring during times of loss. By seeking refuge in Allah from the 'evil of every evil creature,' it aims to protect the individual from despair, negative thoughts, and any spiritual harm that might accompany grief. Furthermore, acknowledging Allah as Al-Awwal (The First) and Al-Akhir (The Last) reminds us of His eternal existence, a comfort when facing the finality of loss. The request to 'settle our debts and enrich us from poverty' can be interpreted both literally and metaphorically, asking for relief from burdens and a sense of contentment and spiritual wealth.

The narration states that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to supplicate with these words: 'Allahumma Rabba as-samawati wa al-ard, Rabbana wa Rabba kulli shay', faliq al-habbi wa an-nawa, wa munzil at-Tawrati wal-Injili wal-Qur'an, a'udhu bika min sharri kulli dhi sharra anta akhidhun bi-nasiyatih. Allahumma anta al-Awwalu fa laysa qablaka shay', wa anta al-Akhiru fa laysa ba'daka shay', wa anta adh-Dhahiru fa laysa fawqaka shay', wa anta al-Batinu fa laysa duna ka shay', iqdi 'anna daynana wa aghnina min al-faqr.'
