Spouse
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2095

O Allah, I ask You for its (her) goodness and the goodness of what You have decreed for her, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what You have decreed for her.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ma jabaltaha 'alayh, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jabaltaha 'alayh.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is traditionally recited by a husband upon completing the marriage contract, praying for his wife's well-being and success. However, the principle extends to praying for any spouse (husband or wife) for their success in both their worldly endeavors and their religious commitment. You can make this dua anytime you wish to invoke Allah's blessings for your spouse's career, personal growth, and spiritual journey.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincere intention and a focused heart. Raise your hands if possible, as this is a sign of earnest supplication. Speak directly to Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala), acknowledging His power and mercy. Focus on the specific areas of career and deen where you seek success for your spouse, even while reciting the general wording. While this specific phrasing is for a husband regarding his wife, the concept of making dua for your spouse is universal. You can adapt the sentiment to pray for your husband: 'O Allah, I ask You for his goodness and the goodness of what You have decreed for him, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what You have decreed for him.' The key is the sincere prayer for their well-being in all aspects of life, particularly their connection with Allah and their success in pleasing Him.

Virtues & Benefits

Praying for your spouse's success in deen and career strengthens your marital bond through shared spiritual aspirations. It demonstrates your care and support, fostering a loving and encouraging environment. When we pray for others, especially our partners, Allah often bestows blessings upon us as well. This dua encapsulates a holistic prayer for well-being, encompassing both the spiritual (deen) and the material (career), reflecting the balanced approach Islam teaches for life's pursuits.

‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, what (kind of) salvation is there?” He said: “Guard your tongue, stay in your house, and weep over your sins.” ‘Uqbah said: “While I was mentioning this to him, I saw him directing his finger towards his abdomen and saying: ‘O people, indeed Allah has commanded me to teach you the recitation of what Allah has taught me, so you should learn it.’ And he taught us: ‘O Allah, I ask You for the guidance, piety, chastity, and richness (of heart).’ And I said: “O Messenger of Allah, supplicate for me by saying: ‘O Allah, make me pious.’ And he said: “O Allah, forgive ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir, and make him guided and pious, and make him have abundance (of wealth).’ And when I (or he) was asked about 'what is its goodness?', he said: 'Ask Allah for the goodness of this world and the Hereafter.' And when asked about 'what is its evil?', he said: 'Ask Allah for refuge from the evil of this world and the evil of the Hereafter.' And when asked about 'what is its chastity?', he said: 'Ask Allah for chastity (i.e., freedom from sin).' And when asked about 'its richness?', he said: 'Ask Allah for contentment.' And when I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, supplicate for me by saying: O Allah, grant me the best of what You give to Your servants of good things,' he said: 'O Allah, forgive ‘Uqbah and grant him success and grant him the best of what You give to Your servants of good things.' And he said: 'O ‘Uqbah, if you perform the prayer and seek Allah's forgiveness seventy times in the morning, and supplicate thus: Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ma jabaltaha 'alayh, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jabaltaha 'alayh. (O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what You have decreed for her, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what You have decreed for her.) Then Allah will decree for her what is good.' (This part is potentially misquoted in the source for the specific dua, the core dua is established in other narrations related to marriage)
