โœฆ

Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.

Rabbana dhalamna anfusana wa il lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lanakoonanna minal-khasireen

When to Read

This is a powerful dua from the Quran recited by Adam and Hawwa (upon them be peace) after their mistake. It's perfect to recite when you realize you've wronged your spouse, whether through actions, words, or even thoughts. Recite it with sincere remorse in your heart, ideally after apologizing directly to your spouse, to seek Allah's forgiveness for your part in the hurt caused.

How to Read

Recite this ayah with sincerity and a humble heart. Visualize your spouse and the wrong you committed, asking Allah to forgive your shortcomings in your role as a partner. It's beneficial to say it in the privacy of your own time, perhaps after your obligatory prayers, or even when you are alone with your spouse and can say it softly between you, seeking Allah's grace together. Direct apologies to your spouse should always accompany seeking Allah's forgiveness.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking Allah's forgiveness is paramount for any Muslim, especially when interpersonal relationships are strained due to our own failings. This specific dua, taught directly by Allah to Adam and Eve, embodies sincere repentance and acknowledges our own wrongdoing. It is a pathway to Allah's mercy and acceptance, essential for healing not just our relationship with our Creator, but also our relationships with His creation, including our spouse. By seeking Allah's pardon, we are more likely to find peace within ourselves and a renewed capacity for love and understanding within our marriage. It reminds us that all shortcomings are ultimately met with Allah's boundless forgiveness if we turn to Him with genuine regret.
