O Allah, guide me to the best of deeds and character, for none can guide to the best of them except You, and turn me away from bad deeds and character, for none can turn away from them except You.
Allahumma ihdini li-ahsanil-akhlaqi la yahdi li-ahsaniha illa Anta, wasrif 'anni sayyi'aha la yasrifu 'anni sayyi'aha illa Anta.
When to Read
This powerful supplication is perfect for reciting daily, especially during the times when duas are more likely to be answered, like after prayers, in the last third of the night, or when breaking your fast. You can make it a habit to recite it in the morning or evening, asking Allah to protect both yourself and your spouse from the destructive influence of arrogance.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on its meaning. Raise your hands as you would for other supplications. You can make this dua for yourself, for your spouse, or for both. It's beautiful to make it a shared practice, perhaps reciting it together after Salah or before sleeping, fostering a spiritual connection centered on mutual growth in good character.
Virtues & Benefits
Arrogance (kibr) is a severe spiritual disease that can destroy one's faith and actions. It's the first sin committed in the heavens (Iblis) and on Earth (Qabil). By asking Allah to guide towards the best character and away from the worst, we are seeking protection from this major sin. Humility, the opposite of arrogance, is a hallmark of the believers and a quality beloved by Allah. This dua, therefore, is crucial for maintaining a healthy spiritual state within ourselves and our relationships, ensuring that our love and marriage are built on a foundation of pleasing Allah.

‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “O Allah, as You have made my creation beautiful, so make my character beautiful, and do not disgrace me in the ranks of the well-known.” He said: “I do not know of any servant of Allah who was asked by Allah to give an account, and he was examined, but he would be punished. And Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: ‘O Allah, guide me to the best of deeds and best of character, for none can guide to the best of them except You, and save me from bad deeds and bad character, for none can save from bad deeds and bad character except You.’”
