Dua Upon Waking: Remembering Allah First Thing

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

When to Read

This is the first dua the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to recite immediately upon waking from sleep. It’s meant to be said before you even move or let your mind wander to the day’s tasks.

Narrated Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Prophet (ﷺ) got up for the night (to offer prayers), he would say: 'Allah is the Greatest! Glory be to Allah! Praise be to Allah! There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest! I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of what I have wrought.' When he woke up from sleep and said this, he would say: 'All praise is due to Allah, Who has given us life after death, and to Him is the resurrection.'

O Allah, I ask You for the life of the happy, the death of a martyr, the victory over enemies, the life of bliss, and companionship of the highest. And grant me help in obeying You, and contentment with Your decree, and gratitude after prosperity, and seizing the branches (of fruits), and a good end, and forgiveness after death, and abundant provision. And there is no life except the life of the Hereafter, with desire and fear, love and awe, and weeping and good deeds. So, O Lord, let us reach our desires, and do not punish us for what we have done, and give us what we ask for, then make us pleased with it, and say to us a word that is accepted. O Allah, You are the First, so there is nothing before You; You are the Last, so there is nothing after You; You are the Outwardly Apparent, so there is nothing above You; You are the Inwardly Hidden, so there is nothing nearer than You. Settle our debts for us and enrich us from poverty.

In the name of Allah, I have laid down my side. O Allah, forgive me my sins, make my resting place good, send forth my soul (in peace), and bless my family for me. Take hold of my hand, forgive my shortcomings, and replace the constriction in my chest with relief. Help me with my debt and its payment. Obey me in my own affairs and do not give power over me to Your creation, nor give power over me to Satan, nor give me power over myself.
