Dua for the Deceased Who Died from Illness

Sickness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his reception and make his resting place spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins just as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his worldly home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This supplication is profoundly suitable to be recited when attending the funeral prayer of a Muslim brother or sister who passed away, particularly if their passing was due to illness. It can also be recited at the graveside during the burial, or at any time after their passing as a continuous act of kindness and remembrance for the deceased.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heavy heart, reflecting on the immense mercy of Allah. It is best recited while standing for the funeral prayer, or while making the supplication after the prayer, or when visiting the grave. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, envisioning Allah's forgiveness and mercy enveloping the deceased. If reciting for a female, adjust the pronouns accordingly (e.g., 'lahu' becomes 'laha', 'hu' becomes 'ha').

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encapsulates the core requests we make for a deceased Muslim. It asks for Allah's forgiveness and mercy, essential for passing the tests of the grave and the Day of Judgment. Asking for 'well-being and pardon' (''aafihi, wa'fu 'anhu') seeks relief from the pains of this life and the hereafter. The plea for 'honored reception' and a 'spacious resting place' (nuzul and madkhal) is a request for a comfortable transition into the grave. The purification with water, snow, and hail symbolizes washing away all impurities, physical and spiritual, and the comparison to purifying a white garment highlights the absolute cleanliness sought. Replacing their home, family, and spouse signifies a transition to the ultimate abode, the best of homes with the best of companions in Paradise. Finally, seeking refuge from the grave and the Fire are critical requests for ultimate salvation.

Source & Authentication

When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) prayed over a deceased person, he would say: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his reception and make his resting place spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins just as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his worldly home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.' (Sahih Muslim 963)
