Sickness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5743

O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the suffering, heal [him/her], You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind.

Allahumma Rabba-n-nas, adhhabil-ba's, ishfi anta-sh-shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uka, shifa'an la yughadiru saqama.

When to Read

This powerful dua is specifically recommended by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for someone who is critically ill. It's recited for a patient in severe distress or when their condition is grave, to invoke Allah's direct healing and relief.

How to Read

It is best recited with sincerity and conviction, placing your hand on the sick person's body if possible. Recite it seven times, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, and focus your heart on Allah's power to heal. It can be recited by the patient themselves, or by a loved one on their behalf.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates the essence of seeking Allah's unique power over all ailments. By acknowledging Allah as 'Ar-Rabb' (The Lord) and 'Ash-Shafi' (The Healer), we affirm our complete reliance on Him. The request for 'healing that leaves no illness behind' is a plea for complete restoration, a mercy only Allah can grant.

Source & Authentication

ʿAishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that when any of Allah's Messenger's (ﷺ) were sick, he would recite the Mu'awwidhat and blow gently. When he became seriously ill, I used to recite them and rub his hands with my own hands because of their (good fortune's) blessing. I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying: 'O Allah, Lord of the people, remove the distress, heal him (her), You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5743, Sahih Muslim 2191).
