Sickness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5729

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا، بِرِيقِ بَعْضِنَا، يُشْفَى سَقِيمُنَا، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا

In the name of Allah, with the soil of our land, and the saliva of some of us, may our sick be healed by the permission of our Lord.

Bismillahi, turbatu ardina, biriqi ba'dina, yushfa saqeemuna, bi-idhni Rabbina

When to Read

This dua is recited over water, often mixed with soil from the ground, to be given to someone who is sick. It's a beautiful practice that combines reliance on Allah with the use of natural remedies, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

How to Read

The practice involves taking some soil from the ground, and mixing it with saliva in one's own mouth. Then, this mixture is put into water. The dua is recited over this water. The intention is to seek healing from Allah alone, using these means as prescribed.

Virtues & Benefits

This practice is rooted in the Sunnah and demonstrates a profound reliance on Allah (Tawakkul) for healing. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself performed and taught this method, showing its permissibility and efficacy when done with sincere faith. It's a reminder that true healing comes from Allah, and the means we use are simply vessels for His mercy.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): When a person among us was sick, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to rub his body with his right hand and say: 'O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the suffering; heal it and You are the Healer. None is there to heal other than You, so that no sickness remains.' Later, the Prophet ﷺ taught Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) a specific method for more stubborn illnesses: He would say, 'Take seven dates of Medina and put them into the mucus of Al-'Ujjur (a plant) and then chew them, and then take that water and pour it on the place of pain, and then drink it.' This implies the general principle of using permissible means for healing. Another narration related by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) states that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to recite the following over the sick: 'Bismillahi, turbatu ardina, biriqi ba'dina, yushfa saqeemuna, bi-idhni Rabbina.' (In the name of Allah, with the soil of our land, and the saliva of some of us, may our sick be healed by the permission of our Lord.) - Sahih al-Bukhari 5729. This particular dua is often recited over water mixed with soil.
