Dua for Protection Against Genetic Diseases

Sickness
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5074

O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion and my worldly affairs, my family and my property. O Allah, conceal my flaws and secure my fears. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence from being struck from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fi deeni wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahum-mastur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahum-mahfadhni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi, wa 'an yameeni wa 'an shimali, wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi-'adhamatika an ughtala min tahti.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is excellent to recite daily, especially in the morning and evening, as it encompasses asking Allah for protection against all forms of harm, including physical ailments and inherited conditions. Reciting it during times of illness, or when a family history of genetic diseases is known, can bring immense peace of mind and seeking divine refuge.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands as you do so, just as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us. Understand the meaning of each phrase and truly feel the reliance on Allah. It's also beneficial to combine this with general remembrance of Allah (dhikr) and other supplications for health and well-being.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking 'afiyah (well-being, safety, good health) from Allah is one of the most comprehensive requests one can make. It covers protection from all types of hardship, physical and spiritual. By asking Allah to protect us from 'all sides' and 'from beneath us,' we are essentially seeking His encompassing protection, which would inherently include safeguarding our health and the health of our offspring from debilitating genetic conditions. It fosters a deep sense of reliance on Allah, reminding us that ultimate protection and healing come from Him alone.

Source & Authentication

The narration states that Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) never let this supplication pass him by day or night. He said: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fi deeni wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahum-mastur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahum-mahfadhni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi, wa 'an yameeni wa 'an shimali, wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi-'adhamatika an ughtala min tahti.' (O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion and my worldly affairs, my family and my property.
