It is a comprehensive plea that encompasses the removal of pain ('al-ba's'), the request for healing, and the acknowledgment of Allah's exclusive role as the Shafi (The Healer). The final part, 'a healing that leaves no disease behind,' is a request for complete and lasting recovery.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from 'Urwah bin Al-Mushtabbi that when he fell ill, he went to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: 'O Mother of the believers! You have heard of my illness.' She said: 'What is wrong with you?' He said: 'My ailment is what you see.' So Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach us a supplication to use when one of us fell ill. We would recite it, take some of the soil from the ground and put it in our saliva, and then recite: "Adhhibil-ba's, Rabban-nas, wasfi anta-sh-Shafi, la shifaa'a illa shifaa'uka, shifaa'an la yughadiru saqaman."' [Translation: 'Remove the suffering, O Lord of mankind! And heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no disease behind.']
