Sickness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5743

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, Lord of mankind! Remove the suffering, heal [him/her], for You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves no ailment behind.

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim Allahumma Rabban-nasi, adh-hibil-ba's, ishfi anta ash-shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uka, shifa'an la yughadiru saqama.

When to Read

This dua is for anyone whose spouse is suffering from illness. It's a beautiful supplication to make during times of sickness, whether it's a minor ailment or a more serious condition. You can recite it with your hands placed on your spouse, or even if they are not present, as a heartfelt plea to Allah for their recovery.

How to Read

It is recommended to recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. Place your right hand on the area of pain if possible, and repeat the dua seven times, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Believe in Allah's power to heal and His infinite mercy. Combine this dua with other acts of worship and seeking forgiveness for you and your spouse.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates the core belief of a Muslim that ultimate healing comes from Allah alone. It acknowledges His Lordship over all of humanity and His unique attribute as the Healer. By seeking 'a healing that leaves no ailment behind,' we are asking for complete restoration, not just temporary relief. The Prophet's ﷺ own practice of teaching and performing this dua highlights its immense virtue and effectiveness when made with a believing heart.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ visited a patient and recited the following dua: 'Allahumma Rabban-nasi, adh-hibil-ba's, ishfi anta ash-shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uka, shifa'an la yughadiru saqama.' (O Allah, Lord of mankind! Remove the suffering, heal him, for You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves no ailment behind.) He then said, 'When any of you visits a sick person, he should ask Allah to heal him and say this dua three times.' (Sahih Muslim 2165). The version in Sahih al-Bukhari 5743 is slightly different in wording but carries the same profound meaning.
