Dua for a Sick Animal: Seeking Allah's Mercy and Showing Compassion

Sickness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5743

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا بِرِيقِ بَعْضِنَا، يُشْفَى سَقِيمُنَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا

In the name of Allah, the soil of our land mixed with the saliva of some of us, our sick will be healed by the permission of our Lord.

Bismillahi, turbatu ardina biriqi ba'dina yushfa saqeemunā bi'idhni Rabbina.

When to Read

This dua is recited when an animal is sick. It's a prayer for its recovery, invoking Allah's healing power, much like the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did for his companions. It's a beautiful way to acknowledge our responsibility towards the creatures Allah has placed in our care.

How to Read

While this specific hadith details a method of applying earth mixed with saliva to the sick person (with a slight variation for animals implied by the general principle of caring for them), the essence of the dua can be recited with sincerity and compassion when tending to a sick animal. You can place your hand gently on the animal, recite this dua with heartfelt supplication, and then continue with any practical care the animal needs. The sincerity of your intention and your compassion are key.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, and the practice it stems from, highlights the immense mercy of Allah and His power to heal. It teaches us the importance of compassion towards all of Allah's creation, as Prophet Muhammad ﷺ exemplified. Caring for an animal and supplicating for its health is a reflection of our own faith and our understanding of the interconnectedness of life under Allah's dominion. It reminds us that even the smallest of creatures are under Allah's care, and our efforts to help them are observed and rewarded by Him.

Narrated 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): When any of us got sick, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) would rub his hand (on the patient's body) and say, 'O Allah, Lord of the people, remove the suffering, heal it (as You are the Healer) and there is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no disease.' Sahih al-Bukhari 5743. Another version of the dua for sickness mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari 5744 states: 'Bismillahi turbatu ardina biriqi ba'dina yushfa saqeemunā bi'idhni Rabbina' (In the name of Allah, the soil of our land mixed with the saliva of some of us, our sick will be healed by the permission of our Lord).
