Sickness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 5746 (Bukhari), 2194 (Muslim)

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا، بِرِيقِ بَعْضِنَا، شِفَاءُ سَقِيمِنَا، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا.

In the name of Allah, the earth of our land, with the saliva of some of us, is a healing for our sick, by the permission of our Lord.

Bismillah, turbatu ardhina, biriqa ba'dina, shifau saqimina, bi idhni rabbina.

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when used as a form of Ruqyah (Islamic spiritual healing) for a sickness like a persistent cough. It's meant to be recited with faith and conviction, often placed directly on the affected area or by someone performing Ruqyah for a loved one. The essence of the dua is seeking Allah's healing through His creation and His command, acknowledging that ultimate recovery comes only from Him.

How to Read

Ideally, this dua should be recited by the person who is sick, or by a righteous person seeking Allah’s healing for them. It is recommended to place the hand on the site of the pain or ailment while reciting. Some scholars mention combining this recitation with blowing gently onto the hand or the affected area, as the hadith implies incorporating the 'saliva of some of us'. The key is sincerity, focusing one's heart on Allah's power to heal, and reciting with absolute certainty that He is the ultimate Healer.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua encapsulates the core of seeking healing in Islam: acknowledging Allah as the sole source of cure while utilizing permissible means He has created. It teaches us humility and dependence on the Almighty. By reciting this, we reaffirm our Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and our belief that nothing happens without His permission. It's a powerful reminder that even the seemingly simple elements of nature can be instruments of Allah's mercy and healing when invoked with faith.

Source & Authentication

‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: When any person among them complained of a disease or if there was a wound or a cut, the Prophet (ﷺ) would point with his finger saying: ‘Bismillah, the earth of our land, with the saliva of some of us, is a healing for our sick, by the permission of our Lord.’ (Sahih al-Bukhari 5746). Another narration: When the Prophet (ﷺ) visited a patient or he was visited by a patient, he would say these words: ‘O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the disease, heal it (for You are the Healer) and there is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no disease behind.’ (Sahih al-Bukhari 5412). The specific dua for reciting on an ailment is mentioned in Sahih Muslim: ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that when Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) complained about something, he would recite this Surah [Al-Falaq and An-Nas] and blow on his body. And when he had pain in his body, he would recite this Surah and blow on himself with his hands. I said: 'O Allah's Messenger, I see you doing this blowing when you are in pain.' He replied: 'Yes, ‘A’ishah. Any person who recites it three times every morning and evening will be protected from many adversities.'
