The Dua for Contentment: Seeking Allah's Aid Against Sadness

Sadness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

It's a comprehensive plea that covers many common sources of distress.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a deep sense of reliance on Allah. Raise your hands in supplication as you do so, if possible, as this is a beautiful Sunnah. Reflect on the meaning of each phrase. Recognize that seeking refuge in Allah is the most potent way to ward off negative feelings and circumstances. It's not just about uttering words; it's about submitting your heart and trusting in His plan. Repeat it regularly, especially after the obligatory prayers, to make it a consistent part of your spiritual practice.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, is a powerful shield against various forms of distress. By seeking Allah's refuge, we acknowledge our own limitations and His infinite power to help. It helps to alleviate sadness (huzn) and anxiety (hamm) by shifting our focus from the problem to the Solution Provider. It also addresses practical concerns like lack of motivation (laziness/kasal) and fear (cowardice/jubn), as well as financial burdens (debt/dayn) and social pressures (oppression/qahr). True contentment (rida) blossoms when we entrust our affairs to Allah and seek His protection from all that weighs us down.
