Dua for Sadness and Anxiety: Seeking Allah's Help

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 1/391

O Allah, indeed I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your judgment upon me prevails. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to any of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quran the life of my heart, and the light of my breast, and a banisher of my sadness, and a reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaibi 'indak, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to a man who came to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I find myself overcome by sadness and my affairs are confused.' The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'I will teach you words by which Allah will remove your sadness and settle your confusion.' He then taught him the dua: 'Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaibi 'indak, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.'
