Dua for When Worries Weigh You Down

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 1695

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your decision concerning me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You, which You have bestowed upon Yourself, or You have revealed in Your Book, or You have taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in Your knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya h ukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaibi 'indaka, an taj'alal-Qur'ana rabee'a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is perfect for those moments when the weight of life's worries and anxieties feels crushing. Recite it when you're feeling particularly stressed, sad, or overwhelmed by your circumstances. It's a way to directly turn to Allah, acknowledging His complete control and seeking His ultimate relief.

How to Read

This dua is best recited with sincere intention and a humble heart. Facing the Qiblah (direction of prayer) is recommended, though not strictly necessary when seeking Allah's help in private. Raise your hands in supplication as you recite it, mirroring the Prophet's ﷺ practice. Feel the words as you speak them, internalizing the plea for the Qur'an to bring you peace and clarity.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound way to connect with the Qur'an as a source of healing and tranquility. By asking Allah to make the Qur'an the 'spring of the heart,' we are seeking renewal and vitality. It becomes the 'light of the chest,' illuminating our path and dispelling darkness. As the 'banisher of sadness' and 'reliever of anxiety,' it offers a direct pathway to peace, reminding us that true comfort comes from our Creator.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abdullah bin Mas'ud that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'No person suffered any anxiety or grief, and then said: "O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your decision concerning me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You, which You have bestowed upon Yourself, or You have revealed in Your Book, or You have taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in Your knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety", but Allah would take away his anxiety and grief, and substitute (in its place) joy.' It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we learn these words?' He said: 'Yes, it is essential for everyone who hears them to learn them.' (Narrated by Ahmad, Ibn Hibban, and others, and authenticated as Hasan.)
