Dua for the Sadness of Missing the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Sadness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6357

O Allah, bestow Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, just as You bestowed Your blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. O Allah, bestow Your protection upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, just as You bestowed Your protection upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.

When to Read

This is the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ prescribed way of sending blessings upon himself, which brings immense comfort and closeness to him. When you feel the ache of missing the Prophet ﷺ, or even just to strengthen your connection, reciting this Salawat is a beautiful way to feel his presence in your heart. It's especially fitting when reflecting on his teachings, his sacrifices, and his unparalleled mercy, or when feeling a pang of longing to have lived in his time.

How to Read

Recite this Salawat with sincerity and devotion. Picture the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in your mind, and feel the love and respect for him. Imagine the blessings showering down upon him and, by extension, upon you. It’s a practice that can be done anytime, anywhere, but doing it with mindfulness and a presence of heart will amplify its effect. You can also incorporate this into your daily remembrance (dhikr) routine.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that whoever sends blessings upon him once, Allah sends blessings upon them ten times in return (Sahih Muslim 388). This act of sending blessings (Salawat) is a sign of love for the Prophet ﷺ and a means of drawing closer to him. When we feel the sadness of missing him, reciting this specific Salawat, which he himself taught us, directly addresses that feeling by sending him the very mercy and praise he embodied. It's a way of fulfilling the command to love Allah and His Messenger, and it fosters a deep spiritual connection that transcends time and space.
