Sadness
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3205

O Allah, forgive [Name of the deceased], elevate his rank among those who are guided. Grant Your succession to his descendants. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Make his grave spacious and fill it with light for him.

Allahumma-ghfir li Fulan ibn Fulan, raf'a darajatahu fil-mahdiyyin, wakhlafhu fi 'aqibihi, waghfir lana walahu ya Rabb al-'alamin, wafsah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu fih.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication that can be recited at any time after the passing of a loved one. It is particularly appropriate during funeral prayers, on the anniversary of their passing, or simply whenever you remember them and wish to send them blessings. You can also use it when visiting their grave.

How to Read

When reciting this dua, it is best to do so with sincerity and a heart full of remembrance for your loved one. If you are praying for a specific person, mention their name and their father's name in the place of 'Fulan ibn Fulan' (e.g., 'Allahumma-ghfir li Ahmad ibn Muhammad'). It is recommended to make this dua with the intention of seeking Allah's mercy for the deceased and for yourself and your family. Raising your hands can be done, as is customary in supplication, though it is not a strict condition.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses several profound requests: seeking Allah's forgiveness for the deceased, which is a continuous source of reward for them; asking for their elevated status among the righteous; praying for the well-being of their surviving family, ensuring continuity and mercy; and requesting that their grave be a place of comfort and light. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that the best of deeds for the deceased is continuous charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), a sincere dua, and seeking knowledge that benefits others after their passing. This supplication embodies the sincere dua that benefits the departed soul.

Source & Authentication

The narration is from 'Amr bin Shu'aib from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet ﷺ taught them a supplication to say when a deceased person was placed in the grave: 'Allahumma-ghfir li Fulan ibn Fulan, raf'a darajatahu fil-mahdiyyin, wakhlafhu fi 'aqibihi, waghfir lana walahu ya Rabb al-'alamin, wafsah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu fih.' (Allahumma-ghfir li [Name of the deceased], elevate his rank among those who are guided. Grant Your succession to his descendants. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Make his grave spacious and fill it with light for him.) This narration was graded Hasan by Imam Al-Albani.
