Dua for Solace After Setbacks: When Efforts Fall Short

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3892

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your decree concerning me is ever inescapable, and Your judgment of me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to anyone among Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or kept with You in the knowledge of the unseen. I ask that You make the Quran the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my anxieties.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibn 'abdika, ibn amatika, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya h*ukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uka. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammaita bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabii'a qalbii, wa nuura sadrii, wa jalaa'a huznii, wa dhahaaba hammii.

It shifts focus from the failed endeavor to reliance on the Creator and the divine guidance found in the Quran, offering hope and resilience.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once saw Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) in the mosque, sitting alone in a gloomy state. He asked him what was wrong. Abu Dharr replied, 'My heart has become hard and my worries have increased.' The Prophet ﷺ told him, 'O Abu Dharr, should I not teach you two phrases that are from the treasures of the treasures of the Quran? Say: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your decree concerning me is ever inescapable, and Your judgment of me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to anyone among Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or kept with You in the knowledge of the unseen. I ask that You make the Quran the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my anxieties.' Abu Dharr said, 'O Allah's Messenger, I said these words, and Allah removed my sadness and anxiety.' (Reported by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad, and authenticated by scholars as Hasan Lighayrihi). **Context:** This dua is a profound teaching from our beloved Prophet ﷺ, given to a companion who was experiencing deep emotional distress. It highlights that even in moments of personal failure or sadness, turning to Allah with sincerity and seeking refuge in His words is the ultimate solution. The Prophet ﷺ specifically identified the Quran as the key to overcoming grief and anxiety, framing it as the 'springtime' for the heart.
