Dua for Sadness When Witnessing the Suffering of the Ummah

Sadness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This dua is profoundly relevant when the suffering of fellow Muslims, or indeed any human beings, weighs heavily on your heart. It's for those moments when you feel a deep sadness, perhaps helplessness, witnessing injustice, war, poverty, or any form of affliction affecting the Ummah. Recite it during times of personal grief or when the collective pain of the community becomes overwhelming.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere conviction, raising your hands slightly if possible, as is the Sunnah when seeking refuge with Allah. Understand the meaning of each phrase and internalize the plea for Allah's protection. Say it with a humble heart, acknowledging that true strength and relief come only from Him. Repeating it can be beneficial, especially during moments of intense sadness or worry.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, directly addresses afflictions that can lead to deep sadness and despair. By seeking refuge in Allah from distress (hamm) and sorrow (hazan), we acknowledge His power over our emotional states. Seeking refuge from incapacity ('ajz) and laziness (kasal) empowers us to act constructively rather than succumb to despair. Protection from cowardice (jubn) and stinginess (buhl) fortifies our resolve to help others and contribute positively. Finally, seeking refuge from overwhelming debt and the overpowering of men addresses external pressures that can exacerbate inner turmoil. This dua helps not only to alleviate personal sadness but also to equip us with the spiritual and emotional resilience needed to face the challenges of the world and support those who are suffering.
