Dua for Sadness When Facing the Loss of a Mentor

Sadness
Sahih HadithMusnad Ahmad 3712

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed, and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You named Yourself with, or taught to anyone of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or You kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sadness, and the reliever of my distress.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, wabnu 'abdika, wabnu amatika, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, awista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'alal-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

The loss of a mentor is a uniquely challenging form of grief. It's not just the absence of a person, but the void left by their wisdom, guidance, and inspiration. When your heart feels heavy with this particular sorrow, when you find yourself longing for their counsel, or overwhelmed by the path ahead without them, this profound supplication is for you. Recite it when sadness settles in, during moments of reflection, or whenever you seek comfort and strength to navigate life without their direct presence. It's a prayer to surrender your grief to Allah and seek His direct solace.

How to Read

Approach this dua with humility and a sincere conviction in Allah's boundless mercy and ability to heal. While there's no specific time prescribed, reciting it during your personal moments of reflection, after your obligatory prayers, or during the last third of the night can deepen your connection. Raise your hands as a sign of earnest pleading, if you wish, and reflect deeply on each phrase. Acknowledge your utter dependence on Allah, then articulate your need for the Qur'an to be the source of your comfort and the remover of your profound sadness. Internalize the meaning of placing your entire being and destiny in His Hand.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ promised immense relief and joy to anyone who recites this comprehensive dua during times of distress and sorrow. By proclaiming yourself completely a servant of Allah and acknowledging His absolute control and just decree, you are expressing ultimate submission. This act of surrender itself brings a profound sense of peace. The core of this dua is asking Allah to make the Qur'an the "spring of your heart" and "light of your chest," signifying that spiritual solace and guidance from His words are the true remedies for inner turmoil. When Allah becomes the remover of your sadness (*huzn*) and distress (*hamm*), He replaces your grief with tranquility, strengthens your resolve, and guides you to acceptance and inner peace, even in the face of profound loss. It reminds us that Allah is the ultimate bestower of comfort.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No servant is afflicted with anxiety and sorrow, and then says: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي عَبْدُكَ، وَابْنُ عَبْدِكَ، وَابْنُ أَمَتِكَ، نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ، مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ، أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ، أَوْ أَنْزَلْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ، أَوْ عَلَّمْتَهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ، أَوِ اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ، أَنْ تَجْعَلَ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي، وَنُورَ صَدْرِي، وَجَلَاءَ حُزْنِي، وَذَهَابَ هَمِّي. ... but Allah will remove his anxiety and sorrow, and replace it with joy." Some added: "It was said, 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn it?' He ﷺ said, 'Of course, whoever hears it should learn it.'"
