Dua for Sadness When Dreams Are Delayed

Sadness
Sahih HadithMusnad Ahmad 1/391

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to any of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibn 'abdika, ibn amatika, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jalaa'i huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This dua is profoundly beautiful for anyone feeling overwhelmed by sadness, especially when their aspirations or dreams feel far off and unattainable. It's a powerful invocation to turn towards the ultimate source of comfort and guidance, the Qur'an, when the weight of delayed dreams feels heavy.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused heart. Understand the meaning of each phrase as you utter it. It's best recited during times of quiet reflection, perhaps after salah, or whenever you feel the pangs of sadness and disappointment. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to supplicate using Allah's beautiful names and attributes, and this dua does just that, so be mindful of the immense power and mercy you are calling upon.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a direct supplication to Allah, asking Him to make the Qur'an the source of solace and clarity in our lives. When dreams are delayed, it's easy to fall into despair, but turning to the Qur'an as our 'springtime' means it revives our hearts, bringing them back to life with hope and peace. It's the 'light of our chest' that dispels the darkness of worry, and the 'banisher of sadness' and 'remover of worries'. This practice aligns with the core Islamic principle of seeking help and comfort from Allah alone, recognizing His power to transform our emotional state through His divine word.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, 'No person suffered any anxiety or grief, and then said: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to any of Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my worries, except that Allah will remove his anxiety and grief and replace them with joy.' Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: 'Should we learn this dua?' He replied: 'Yes, he who hears it should learn it.' (Reported by Ahmad and others with a reliable chain of narration).
