Dua for Sadness When Dreams Are Delayed

Sadness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 4423

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabad-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

This powerful dua is perfect for those moments when you feel overwhelmed by sadness, especially when your aspirations and dreams seem to be taking too long to manifest. It's a comprehensive supplication for relief from various forms of distress, including the frustration that can arise from delayed goals. Recite it when you feel a weight on your chest, when worry clouds your thoughts, or when you feel stuck and unable to move forward.

How to Read

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to raise our hands when making dua, though it's not strictly required for this particular supplication. Focus on the sincerity of your heart and the certainty that Allah is listening. Utter the words with conviction, internalizing their meaning. Say it in a quiet place where you can concentrate, perhaps after your obligatory prayers or during the blessed times of the night. Repeating it consistently can strengthen its effect.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a treasure from the Sunnah. It’s not just about seeking relief from sadness, but also about protection from deeper spiritual and emotional ailments. By seeking refuge in Allah from distress and sorrow (Al-Ham wal-Hazan), we ask for His divine intervention to lift the burden. The inclusion of seeking refuge from incapacity and laziness (Al-'Ajz wal-Kasal) is crucial because these can be major obstacles to achieving our dreams. Furthermore, protecting ourselves from cowardice and stinginess (Al-Jubn wal-Buhl) fortifies our character, enabling us to face challenges with bravery and generosity. Finally, asking for protection from debt and the oppression of men (Ghalabat-dayn wa Qahr-rijal) addresses significant worldly concerns that can cause immense hardship and sadness. It’s a holistic supplication that seeks Allah's help in all aspects of life, leading to inner peace and the ability to pursue our aspirations with renewed hope.
