Dua for Sadness: Seeking Solace in Allah Amidst Declining Values

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3701

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibn 'abdika, ibn amatika, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaibi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabia'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This dua is particularly poignant when you feel overwhelmed by the state of affairs, witnessing a decline in Islamic values or practices around you. It's a moment to turn inward, acknowledge your dependence on Allah, and seek His help in making His words a source of comfort and guidance. Recite it privately, perhaps after salah or during a quiet moment of reflection, when sadness or concern weighs on your heart.

How to Read

Begin by acknowledging your servitude to Allah, recognizing that your life and destiny are in His hands. Raise your hands (if you feel comfortable and it's appropriate for the setting) and earnestly supplicate, focusing on the meaning of the words. The key is sincerity and the heartfelt belief that Allah alone can relieve your sadness and bring peace to your heart through the Qur'an.

Virtues & Benefits

This profound supplication directly asks Allah to make the Qur'an the source of immense spiritual and emotional well-being. It serves as a powerful reminder that our solace and strength come from our connection with the Divine and His perfect revelation. When the world outside feels chaotic or disheartening, turning to the Qur'an as 'the springtime of the heart' means it brings life, growth, and renewal to our spiritual state. As the light of our chest, it dispels darkness and confusion, offering clarity and purpose. It is the ultimate remedy for sadness and worry, fulfilling the request of 'the banisher of sadness and the reliever of worry'.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "When any of my Ummah is afflicted with distress and then resorts to this supplication, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will surely remove his distress. (This is the supplication): 'Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibn 'abdika, ibn amatika, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaibi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabia'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.'" (Narrated by Ahmad, and he said it is a Hasan Hadith).
