Dua for Sadness and the Loss of Cherished Memories

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3701

O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave. My forelock is in Your hand. Your decree concerning me is inevitable, and Your judgment concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any one of Your creation, or kept exclusively to Yourself in the knowledge of the Unseen that is with You, to make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful dua is perfect for times when you feel overwhelmed by sadness, grief, or the weight of anxiety. It's especially potent when you feel your cherished memories have become a source of pain or have faded, leaving a void. Recite it after every obligatory prayer, or whenever you find yourself in a state of deep sorrow, seeking Allah's solace and guidance.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincerity and certainty in Allah's mercy. It is best recited after completing your obligatory prayers, placing your hands over your chest (where the heart resides) as you make your supplication. Speak from your heart, reflecting on the meaning of the words, and feel the presence of Allah as you ask Him to transform your sorrow through the blessed Qur'an.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to a companion struggling with distress, offers immense relief. By calling upon Allah with His most beautiful names and attributes, and by seeking the Qur'an as a source of comfort, you invite spiritual healing. The Qur'an itself is described as a 'springtime' for the heart, bringing life and growth, a 'light' for the chest, dispelling darkness, and a means to banish sadness and anxiety. It acknowledges the power of Allah over all matters and seeks His divine intervention to replace sorrow with peace.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a person is in distress and says: 'Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi,' (O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave. My forelock is in Your hand. Your decree concerning me is inevitable, and Your judgment concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any one of Your creation, or kept exclusively to Yourself in the knowledge of the Unseen that is with You, to make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety), then his distress will be removed, and his sadness will be replaced by joy.' So, they said: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn these words?' He said: 'Yes, indeed, it is necessary for everyone who hears them after me to learn them.' - Musnad Ahmad 3701 (Hasan)
