Dua for Sadness and Hope When Starting Anew After Loss

Sadness
Sahih HadithMusnad Ahmad 1/391

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your judgment on me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitābika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful dua is perfect for moments when you're grappling with profound sadness, particularly when facing a new chapter in life after experiencing a significant loss – be it a loved one, a job, a relationship, or a familiar phase of life. Recite it when you feel the weight of grief pressing down, making it hard to see the light ahead. It's especially fitting as you begin something new, reminding you that even in transition, Allah's guidance and the Qur'an are constant sources of comfort and strength.

How to Read

It is best to recite this dua with a sincere heart, acknowledging your reliance on Allah. Raise your hands in supplication if you are able. Focus on the meaning of each word, letting the profound request sink in. Take deep breaths and remember that Allah is near and attentive to your needs. It can be recited at any time, but its effect is often heightened during the blessed times, such as after obligatory prayers, during the night, or on Fridays.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a comprehensive request for relief from sorrow and anxiety by turning to the ultimate source of solace: the Qur'an. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his companion Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was in distress, and it is a powerful means of seeking Allah's help to overcome sadness and worry. By asking Allah to make the Qur'an the 'springtime of the heart,' it signifies a desire for renewal, growth, and vibrant life even amidst hardship. It provides light for the chest, dispelling darkness and confusion, and acts as a cure for grief and a banisher of anxieties.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah from the jinn and the evil eye until the Surahs of Al-Falaq and An-Nas were revealed. When they were revealed, he took to them and abandoned everything else.' (Sahih Muslim). And in another narration, it is mentioned that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) to say this dua when he was in distress: 'O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your judgment on me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my anxiety.' (Ahmad 1/391, Sahih al-Jami' 4228).
