Dua for Sadness and Isolation: Seeking Allah's Comfort

Sadness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is enacted. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen that is with You, to make the Quran the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my sadness, and a reliever of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabee'a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning of the words. Understand that you are humbling yourself before Allah, acknowledging His complete control and wisdom. Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to a companion in distress, addresses the root of sadness and worry by seeking refuge in Allah and His divine attributes. It specifically asks for the Quran to be a source of joy ('springtime'), enlightenment ('light'), and relief from sorrow and anxiety. The Prophet ﷺ assured that Allah would remove the person's sadness and replace their worry with joy, by the grace of Allah. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306).

Source & Authentication

Ibn Mas'ud narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'No person ever suffered any anxiety or grief, and then said: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective. Your judgment of me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself by, or revealed in Your Book, or have taught to any of Your creation, or have kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which You have, that You make the Quran the life of my heart and the light of my chest and a departure for my sadness and a cessation for my worry - but Allah would remove his anxiety and grief and replace them with joy.' So the Companions asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we learn these words?' He said: 'Yes, indeed! It is essential for everyone who hears them to learn them.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306)
