Dua for Sadness and Finding Hope After Job Loss

Sadness
Sahih HadithMusnad Ahmad 3712

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective, and Your decision concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to anyone in Your creation, or taught to any one of Your creation, or have preserved in Your knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a remover of my sadness, and a banisher of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This is a profound dua for moments of deep sadness and worry, particularly relevant when facing a significant setback like losing a job. Recite it when you feel overwhelmed by the situation, acknowledging that Allah (SWT) is the ultimate controller and source of relief. It's beautiful to read this during times of personal reflection, perhaps after Fajr or Isha prayers, or whenever the weight of the loss feels heavy.

How to Read

Ensure you are in a state of purity (wudu) if possible, and face the Qiblah. Utter the words with sincere conviction and a heartfelt plea to Allah (SWT). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to a companion who was suffering from severe worry and sadness. The essence is to turn to Allah (SWT) using His beautiful names and attributes, seeking solace and a solution through His divine wisdom and the guidance of the Qur'an.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses sadness and worry, seeking to transform them through the power of the Qur'an. It's a comprehensive request that acknowledges Allah's (SWT) sovereignty and His infinite knowledge. By asking for the Qur'an to be the 'springtime of the heart,' it implies spiritual renewal and flourishing, replacing barrenness with life. The 'light of the chest' suggests clarity and guidance, while 'remover of sadness' and 'banisher of worries' offer direct relief from distress. This practice helps reframe challenges by connecting us to our Creator and His divine word.

Source & Authentication

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I feel very sad and worried.' The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'Shall I not teach you words that, if you say them, Allah will remove your sadness and settle your worries?' He said: 'Yes, teach me.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective, and Your decision concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to anyone in Your creation, or taught to any one of Your creation, or have preserved in Your knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a remover of my sadness, and a banisher of my worries.' Then the man said: 'I have said these words, and Allah has removed my sadness and settled my worries.' (Reported by Ahmad and others, graded Sahih).
