Dua for Sadness and Feeling Unfulfilled in Religious Practice

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3839

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your judgment upon me is effective. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibn 'abdika, ibn amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

When you find yourself feeling heavy-hearted, listless, or unfulfilled in your religious practices. This can be when prayers feel empty, or acts of worship don't bring the peace they once did. It's a powerful dua to recite during times of spiritual low ebb or when overwhelming sadness casts a shadow over your connection with Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a deep sense of reliance on Allah (tawakkul). Imagine the words sinking into your heart as you speak them. Make a conscious effort to focus on the meaning of each phrase, acknowledging Allah's complete dominion over your life and His infinite knowledge. Repeating it multiple times, especially during the times of the day when supplications are more likely to be answered (like after Asr prayer or before Fajr), can amplify its effect. Remember to couple this dua with sincere seeking of forgiveness and striving to improve your worship.

Virtues & Benefits

This profound dua, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, directly addresses the roots of sadness and spiritual unfulfillment by seeking Allah's help through His most beautiful names and attributes. It aims to transform the heart by making the Qur'an its 'springtime' – the source of life, growth, and renewal. It promises to illuminate the chest, removing darkness and confusion, and most importantly, to 'banish sadness and remove anxiety.' By seeking these immense blessings through the Qur'an, we are asking Allah to make His divine words the remedy for our spiritual and emotional ailments.

Source & Authentication

Narrated 'Abdullah (bin Mas'ud): The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'There is no one who has an anxiety in his heart or a need in his heart and says: "Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibn 'abdika, ibn amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi" - except that Allah will remove his anxiety and compensate him for his need.' He said: 'And there are some people who learn these words. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "But you should learn them, for it is a taught supplication."' (Translation of Sunnah.com version, Hadith 6346)
