Dua for Removing Heaviness from the Heart

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 2661

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your judgment upon me is inevitable. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or kept hidden in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a remover of my sadness and a dispeller of my anxieties.

Allahumma inni 'abdunka, ibn 'abdika, ibn amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukkumuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

How to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication that calls upon Allah by His beautiful names and attributes. Make sure to recite it with sincerity and full presence, contemplating the meaning of each phrase. Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly asks Allah to make the Qur'an a source of joy and relief for your heart. The Qur'an is described as the 'springtime of the heart,' implying it brings life, growth, and beauty to what may feel barren or dry. It's a 'light for the chest,' illuminating the path forward and dispelling darkness. Crucially, it's a 'remover of sadness and a dispeller of anxieties,' directly addressing the very feelings of heaviness that weigh us down.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this comprehensive dua to a companion when he complained about distress and worry. He said: 'Shall I not teach you a comprehensive supplication which you should say if you have a worry or a distress? You should say: Allahumma inni 'abdunka, ibn 'abdika, ibn amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukkumuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.' (O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your judgment upon me is inevitable. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or kept hidden in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a remover of my sadness and a dispeller of my anxieties.)
