Dua for Relief When Crying from Sadness

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 391

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective. Your judgment on me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or have taught to any one of Your creation, or have revealed in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my sadness, and a reliever of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abdak, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw 'i'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi

When tears flow due to overwhelming grief, and you feel a weight on your chest, this supplication is perfect. Recite it when you are alone and seeking direct solace from Allah, acknowledging His absolute control over your life and His infinite knowledge.

How to Read

Begin by acknowledging your state as a servant of Allah, submitting to His will. Utter the dua with sincerity and a broken heart, recognizing the power vested in Allah's names. Focus on the meaning, especially the part where you ask for the Qur'an to be the source of your comfort and relief. It's best recited with a sincere intention and a heartfelt plea, understanding that the greatest relief comes from turning to the divine word.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is particularly powerful because it involves asking Allah using all His beautiful names, which is a highly recommended way to make dua. It seeks to transform sadness and worry by making the Qur'an the central source of comfort and light for the heart and soul. The Prophet ﷺ himself used this dua, indicating its immense value in alleviating distress and bringing spiritual peace.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand, Your judgment on me is ever effective, and Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or that You have taught to anyone from Your creation, or that You have revealed in Your Book, or that You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my sadness, and a reliever of my anxiety - except that Allah will take away his anxiety and grief, and replace it with happiness.' He was asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn this Dua?' He replied: 'Yes, it is incumbent upon everyone who hears it to learn it.'
