Dua for Relief from Persistent Sadness Without a Clear Cause

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 1794

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever enacted. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or have revealed to anyone from Your creation, or have sent down in Your Book, or have kept exclusively to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii bi-yadik, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bi-kulli ismin huwa lak, sammaita bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaibi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is particularly fitting when you find yourself overwhelmed by persistent sadness or a general sense of unease, even when there isn't an obvious external reason. It's a comprehensive request to Allah, acknowledging His absolute power and wisdom, and seeking solace directly from the source of all guidance and healing: the Qur'an. Recite it during times of quiet reflection, after obligatory prayers, or whenever you feel the weight of sadness beginning to settle.

How to Read

Begin by sincerely acknowledging your position as a servant of Allah, recognizing His complete control and just decree over your life. Raise your hands (as is customary for supplication) and beseech Allah using the full, beautiful wording of this dua. Focus your heart and mind on the meaning of the words, especially the request to make the Qur'an a source of comfort and light. Be certain in your heart that Allah hears you and has the power to relieve your distress. Continue to make this dua with persistence and hope.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a profound reliance on Allah and seeks the highest form of spiritual and emotional relief. By asking for the Qur'an to be the 'spring of the heart,' it signifies a desire for spiritual rejuvenation and growth that counteracts feelings of despondency. Its power lies in turning to the ultimate source of solace, the Divine word, acknowledging that true relief comes from understanding and implementing its guidance. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to a man suffering from grief, demonstrating its efficacy in alleviating sorrow and worry (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306).

Source & Authentication

Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'No person suffered any anxiety or grief, and then said: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand, Your decision concerning me will surely be enforced, and Your decree concerning me will surely be just. I ask You by every name that is Yours, which You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the light of my chest, the building of my heart, the departure of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety, except that Allah will take away his anxiety and grief and replace them with relief.' It was said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we learn these words?' He said: 'Yes, indeed! It is recommended for everyone who hears them after me to learn them.'
