Dua for Protection from Sadness and Despair

Sadness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This is a powerful dua to recite daily, especially when you feel overwhelmed by worries, sadness, or a sense of hopelessness. It's particularly beneficial to say it in the morning and evening, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to seek refuge in Allah from the evils that can affect our mental and emotional well-being.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, with conviction in your heart that Allah is the ultimate protector. Raise your hands as you do so, following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly seeking Allah's protection from these specific afflictions. It's recommended to say it after the prescribed prayers or at any time you feel the need for comfort and strength.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive shield against many common sources of distress. By seeking refuge in Allah from distress (hamm) and sorrow (hazan), we are actively asking Him to lift our spirits and grant us contentment. It also protects against feelings of inadequacy (ajz) and lethargy (kasal), which can paralyze us and prevent us from fulfilling our duties. Furthermore, seeking refuge from cowardice (jubn) and stinginess (buhl) helps us become braver and more generous individuals. Finally, asking for protection from overwhelming debt and the oppression of others addresses significant external stressors. It's a profound way to entrust our affairs to Allah and seek His support in navigating life's challenges.
