Dua for Loneliness and Sadness on a Friday

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 391

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abdika, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyatii bi-yadik, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabii'a qalbii, wa nuura sadrii, wa jalaa'a huznii, wa dhahaaba hammii.

When to Read

This powerful dua is particularly relevant on a Friday, a blessed day, when feelings of loneliness or sadness might weigh you down. Recite it especially during the times of acceptance on Friday, such as after Asr prayer until Maghrib, or during the special hour on Friday when supplications are answered. It can also be recited at any time you feel a pang of sadness, a sense of isolation, or an overwhelming burden.

How to Read

Begin by sincerely acknowledging your servitude to Allah, recognizing that you are in His control. Utter the dua with a focused heart, truly believing in the power of Allah's names and attributes. Picture the Qur'an becoming a source of joy, clarity, and peace within you. Raise your hands if reciting outside of prayer, and face the Qiblah if possible. Ensure you are in a state of Wudu if reciting at home.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to a companion when he complained of distress, directly addresses the root causes of sadness and loneliness: a lack of connection to Allah and His guidance. By asking for the Qur'an to be the 'springtime of the heart,' we are seeking a spiritual renewal that dispels gloom. The Prophet ﷺ himself said, 'No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and then says: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety, but Allah will take away his anxiety and grief and replace it with joy.' (Reported by Ahmad and others as Hasan).

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If anyone is afflicted with distress of mind, and then makes this supplication: "O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is effective. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety", Allah will take away his distress and grief and replace it with joy. The Companions asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we learn these words?' He replied: Yes, it is necessary for everyone who hears them to learn them. (Reported by Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and others.)
