Dua for Lingering Sadness After Ramadan

Sadness
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.

O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, provision that is pure, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

Recite this dua after the month of Ramadan, especially when you feel a sense of loss or sadness for its departure. It's particularly useful during the days following Eid al-Fitr, when the spiritual high of Ramadan begins to wane and a sense of emptiness might creep in. Make it a habit to say it after your obligatory prayers, or at any time you feel this lingering sadness.

How to Read

Raise your hands in supplication, facing the Qiblah if possible. Begin by praising Allah and sending Salawat upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Recite the dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart, believing that Allah will grant your request. Reflect on the meaning of each part of the dua as you say it. It is recommended to say it with conviction, visualizing the acceptance of your deeds and the continuation of beneficial knowledge and pure sustenance in your life.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, addresses key aspects of a Muslim's life that can combat feelings of emptiness or sadness. Seeking beneficial knowledge ('ilman nafi'an) helps to deepen our understanding of Islam and our connection with Allah, keeping our minds engaged in righteous pursuits. Asking for pure provision (rizqan tayyiban) reminds us that our sustenance is from Allah and that seeking what is lawful and good brings barakah. Most importantly, requesting accepted deeds ('amalan mutaqabbalan) is the ultimate goal; when our actions are accepted by Allah, it brings immense contentment and peace, which can fill the void left after a blessed month like Ramadan. The acceptance of deeds is a sign of Allah's pleasure, a feeling that transcends worldly happiness.

The Hadith states: 'The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) was asked: 'What is the best supplication?' He said: 'The supplication of a servant in his heart.' He was asked: 'What is the best deed?' He said: 'It is the steadfastness (upon Islam).' He was asked: 'What is the best supplication?' He said: 'Supplication is the brother of calamity, and it prevents what has been decreed and what has not yet been decreed. And the affairs are tied to provisions, so do not seek for provisions to cease, nor for the supplication to cease.' He was asked: 'What is the best supplication?' He said: 'O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure sustenance, and accepted deeds.' He said: 'This is a request that your Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used to ask for.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 925). While the full hadith discusses supplication in general, this specific request is highlighted as something the Prophet ﷺ himself asked for.
