Dua for Hope and Relief from Sadness

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3975

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is inevitable. Your judgment concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to anyone from Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which You possess, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibn 'abdika, ibn amatika, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

This dua is a profound recognition of Allah's might and mercy. By asking Allah to make the Qur'an the 'spring of the heart,' we are asking for spiritual rejuvenation and growth, even in dry and difficult times. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to a companion who was suffering from intense worry and sadness, indicating its efficacy in bringing about relief and happiness.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'If any person is troubled by the anxieties of this world, let him say: Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibn 'abdika, ibn amatika, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi. (O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is inevitable. Your judgment concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed to anyone from Your creation, or sent down in Your Book, or kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which You possess, that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my worries.) A man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, should I not learn these words?' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Yes, it is incumbent upon everyone who hears them to learn them.' (Musnad Ahmad 3975)
