Dua for Finding Sweetness in Worship Amidst Sadness

Sadness
Hasan HadithSunan An-Nasa'i 1305

O Allah, I ask You for everlasting bliss and coolness of the eye that never ceases. I ask You for contentment after destiny, and a pleasant life after death. I ask You for the delight of gazing upon Your Face, and the longing to meet You, not in hardship causing harm, nor in trials leading astray. O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith and make us guides, rightly guided.

Allahumma inni as'aluka na'iman la yabla, wa qurrata 'ainin la tanqati', wa as'alukal-rida ba'dal-qada', wa barda al-'ayshi ba'dal-mawt, wa as'aluka ladhdhatan-nazari ila wajhik, wash-shawqa ila liqa'ika fi ghairi darra'a mudirratin, wa la fitnatin mudillatin. Allahumma zayyinna bizinatul-imani, waj'alna hudatan muhtadain.

When to Read

This dua is particularly beneficial when you find yourself feeling heavy-hearted, overwhelmed by sadness, or struggling to connect with your acts of worship. It’s for those moments when the sweetness of faith seems distant and you yearn to feel that closeness to Allah again. Recite it during times of personal grief, stress, or when facing difficulties that cast a shadow over your spiritual state.

How to Read

As with all supplications, sincerity and conviction are key. Raise your hands (if possible), face the Qiblah, and recite this dua with a humble and hopeful heart. Believe that Allah (SWT) hears your call and has the power to ease your burdens and renew your connection to Him. Make a conscious effort to focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it, visualizing the peace and joy you are asking for.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua encapsulates a profound request for spiritual well-being. It asks for a contentment that transcends worldly troubles ('rida ba'dal-qada') and a lasting joy that extends beyond this life ('barda al-'ayshi ba'dal-mawt'). The ultimate desire for the delight of seeing Allah's Face ('ladhdhatan-nazari ila wajhik') is the pinnacle of spiritual aspiration. By asking for adornment with faith ('zinnat al-iman') and the ability to be guides ('hudatan muhtadain'), it seeks not only personal spiritual upliftment but also the capacity to be a source of guidance for others, even when feeling down.

Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: ‘Ubaydullah bin al-Hasan narrated to us, from Humaid bin ‘Abd ar-Rahman, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to teach them this supplication in times of great need: “Allahumma inni as'aluka na'iman la yabla, wa qurrata 'ainin la tanqati', wa as'alukal-rida ba'dal-qada', wa barda al-'ayshi ba'dal-mawt. Wa as'aluka ladhdhatan-nazari ila wajhik, wash-shawqa ila liqa'ika fi ghairi darra'a mudirratin, wa la fitnatin mudillatin. Allahumma zayyinna bizinat al-iman, waj'alna hudatan muhtadain.” He said: And Humayd bin ‘Abd ar-Rahman said: ‘Abbas bin Musa narrated to us, from Abu al-Nu'man, from Hammad bin Zayd, from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, from Abu Al-Ash'ath, from Abu Musa, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to supplicate with these words: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka na'iman la yabla, wa qurrata 'ainin la tanqati', wa as'alukal-rida ba'dal-qada', wa barda al-'ayshi ba'dal-mawt. Wa as'aluka ladhdhatan-nazari ila wajhik, wash-shawqa ila liqa'ika fi ghairi darra'a mudirratin, wa la fitnatin mudillatin. Allahumma zayyinna bizinat al-iman, waj'alna hudatan muhtadain.' Al-Hasan said: Some of the scholars said: ‘Ubaydullah bin Al-Hasan narrated to us, from Humayd bin ‘Abd ar-Rahman, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to teach them these words, and say: "Verily, Allah tells His servants to call upon Him, and He says: ‘Call upon Me, I will answer you’ [Ghafir 40:60]."'
