Dua for Comfort When Sadness Interferes with Daily Life

Sadness
Sahih HadithMusnad Ahmad 3972

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective. Your justice over me is assured. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or have taught to anyone from Your creation, or have revealed in Your Book, or have retained in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the delight of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukuuka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

Narrated Abdullah bin Mas'ud: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'No person suffered any anxiety or grief, and then said: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your handmaidens. My forehead is in Your hand. Your judgment on me is inevitable. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that is Yours, which You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or have taught to any of Your creation, or have kept in Your possession in the knowledge of the unseen which You have, that You make the Qur'an the light of my heart, and a healing for my chest, and a banisher of my sadness and a reliever of my anxiety, but Allah will remove his anxiety and grief and replace them with joy.' The people said, 'O Messenger of Allah! Should we not learn these words?' He said, 'Yes, indeed. It is essential for everyone who hears this to learn it.'
