Dua for Comfort When Overwhelmed by Life's Trials

Sadness
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3701

O Allah, indeed I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your handmaid. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is inevitable, and Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which You possess, that You make the Quran the delight of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my grief, and the banisher of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

Source & Authentication

Ahmad narrated in his Musnad (3701) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A person who is afflicted with worry and grief should say: Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi. (O Allah, indeed I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your handmaid. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is inevitable, and Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which You possess, that You make the Quran the delight of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my grief, and the banisher of my worries.)' Shu'bah said: 'I said to Abu Ishaq: did he (the companion) learn it from the Prophet ﷺ or did he say it himself?' He said: 'No, but he narrated it from the Prophet ﷺ.'
