Dua for Comfort When Feeling Disconnected from Allah's Mercy

Sadness
Sahih HadithSunan Al-Tirmidhi 3504

O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, by Your mercy I seek relief. Rectify for me all of my affairs and do not entrust me to my own self for even the blink of an eye.

Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyumu bi rahmatika astagheethu, aslih li sha'ni kullahu wa la takilni ila nafsi tarfata 'ayn.

When to Read

Recite this when you feel distant from Allah, overwhelmed by your own shortcomings, or find your heart heavy. It's particularly potent during moments of deep sadness or when you feel lost, reminding you that even in your lowest moments, Allah's mercy is the ultimate source of relief and guidance. Try reciting it after your obligatory prayers or whenever you find yourself alone with your thoughts and feelings.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and a heartfelt conviction that only Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) can rectify your situation. Turn to Him with humility, acknowledging your complete dependence on His mercy. Focus on the meaning of the words, envisioning Allah's infinite grace enveloping you. It's best recited with your hands raised, a sign of supplication and seeking help.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his daughter Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), is a comprehensive plea for Allah's help. It directly appeals to Allah's attributes as the 'Ever-Living' (Al-Hayyu) and 'Self-Sustaining' (Al-Qayyumu), emphasizing His eternal existence and absolute power over all creation. By seeking refuge in His 'mercy' (rahmatika), you are tapping into the vast ocean of compassion that encompasses everything. The dua asks for the rectification of *all* your affairs, indicating a holistic reliance on Allah for spiritual, emotional, and worldly well-being. Most importantly, it highlights the danger of relying on oneself, even for a moment, as true success and stability come only from Allah's constant support. Reciting this can bring immense peace and a sense of reconnection, reminding you that you are never truly alone.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said to his daughter Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her): 'O Fatimah, do not be deluded by anyone saying: I am an ancestor of the Messenger of Allah, for indeed, there is no protector for me from Allah except my deeds. And do not say to me: 'Give me your need'. Rather, say: 'O people, you all will be gathered according to your deeds. I ask Allah, the Lord of the Throne, for my needs and yours.' Then he said to her: 'What prevents you from hearing what I advise you? Say: Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyumu bi rahmatika astagheethu, aslih li sha'ni kullahu wa la takilni ila nafsi tarfata 'ayn.' (O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, by Your mercy I seek relief. Rectify for me all of my affairs and do not entrust me to my own self for even the blink of an eye.) - Sunan Al-Tirmidhi 3504, Sahih Muslim 2719
