Dua for Comfort During Separation from Loved Ones

Sadness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 918

We belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me in this calamity and compensate me with something better.

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn. Allāhumma'jurnī fī muṣībatī wa'akhlif lī khayran minhā.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited when facing any calamity or loss, including the deep sadness that comes from separating from cherished friends. Whether they are moving away, traveling, or facing a more permanent separation, this supplication acknowledges our dependence on Allah and seeks His comfort and a better outcome. It’s a way to ground yourself in the ultimate reality – that all is from Allah and will return to Him – during moments of intense emotional pain.

How to Read

Recite this with sincere conviction, reflecting on the words. Begin by uttering the phrase 'Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn,' acknowledging the divine decree in all circumstances. Then, follow with the supplication 'Allāhumma'jurnī fī muṣībatī wa'akhlif lī khayran minhā,' asking Allah for reward in your hardship and for Him to grant you something superior to what you have lost. It’s best recited at the moment the sadness of separation hits, or when remembering the loved one you miss.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound expression of faith. By reciting 'Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn,' one is reminded of the transient nature of worldly life and the ultimate return to our Creator. This perspective can alleviate the sting of loss and hardship. Asking Allah to 'reward me in this calamity and compensate me with something better' is a direct appeal for divine solace and a testament to trusting Allah’s plan, believing that He, in His infinite wisdom, can provide a greater good even from apparent loss. This attitude can lead to immense spiritual strength and peace.

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'If any servant (of Allah) is afflicted by an affliction and says: 'We belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me in this calamity and compensate me with something better than it,' Allah will reward him for the calamity and compensate him with something better.' Umm Salamah said: When Abu Salamah died, I recited this dua as the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had commanded me, and Allah compensated me with someone better than Abu Salamah (i.e., the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself).
