Dua for Comfort and Relief from Loneliness and Sadness

Sadness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, from the burden of debt and from being overcome by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal

When to Read

This powerful dua is for anyone feeling the weight of loneliness and sadness, especially as one grows older and circumstances may change. Recite it whenever these feelings surface, or make it a regular part of your morning and evening supplications to seek Allah's protection and solace.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity, focusing on the meaning and truly seeking Allah's refuge. It's best recited after the obligatory prayers, but can be said at any time. Raise your hands as you would in supplication, feel the vulnerability in your heart, and ask Allah with conviction.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking refuge from significant emotional and practical burdens. By asking Allah to protect us from anxiety (hamm) and sorrow (hazan), we are seeking relief from the very feelings that can plague us in old age. It also seeks protection from helplessness and lethargy, which can exacerbate feelings of isolation. The latter part of the dua addresses external pressures, such as debt and being overpowered, which can also contribute to distress. Consistent recitation offers a shield against these afflictions and brings a sense of peace through reliance on Allah.

Source & Authentication

The narration states: Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say, 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6369). This was a supplication the Prophet ﷺ would frequently make.
